Programmes offered by Robert Pereira

Teachers are not taught in their teacher training to address the bullying problem. Hence, teachers keep asserting the rules concerning ‘respect for others’ and what constitutes proper behaviour. This is a necessary first step. What teachers need is an educational process that they can use in the classroom to lead children through an informative discussion on ‘why we bully.’ The inservice day(s) conducted by Robert Pereira assist teachers to: - have a deeper understanding on the motives / reasons behind bullying. - understand and use an educational model that is simple, yet effective, to lead a group of children to explore bullying examples. These inservice opportunities for teachers can take the form of: - total staff inservice days - regional seminars where two or three staff from different school can attend. Robert travels throughout Australia to offer this service upon request. He has also worked in New Zealand, South Korea and recently in Singapore.

Rationale

Michael Thompson, author of ‘Best Friends, Worst Enemies’ (2004) claims that “the most successful school-wide bully-prevention programmes, focus on the bystanders…” Usually, it is the victim who seeks counseling. The perpetrator may be unresponsive to counseling. The majority of students watch and witness the daily patterns of bullying….in silence or with laughter. The need is to empower this silent majority. This is not necessarily achieved through an address by the Principal at an Assembly. It can be achieved in a classroom by a classroom teacher who is willing to engage students in a conversation. How to have this conversation is what Robert’s inservice focuses on.

“Why WE Bully” – by Robert Pereira

As a result of hundreds of lessons with students, aged 5 to 18 years, in city and country schools in Australia and New Zealand, Robert has written a 150-page Resource book that explains the process that he teaches at inservice days.

It is a very practical resource, filled with stories that students will instantly recognize, allowing teachers a ‘points of entry’ into the world of the child or teen.

This Resource may be ordered separately.
